Netflix Drops Trailer for Live-Action ‘Kakegurui’ Series

by Chris Davies

Netflix has released the official trailer for its highly anticipated live-action adaptation of Kakegurui, the popular coming-of-age thriller manga by writer Homura Kawamoto and illustrator Toru Naomura. The ten-episode series is scheduled to debut on May 15, 2025.

The series follows the students of a prestigious boarding school for the global elite, where the social hierarchy is determined by underground gambling. The official synopsis describes the arrival of Yumeko, a mysterious transfer student whose exceptional gambling skills draw the attention of the powerful Student Council. Her hidden motive for seeking revenge threatens to completely destabilize the school’s existing power structure.

The trailer introduces the main cast, led by Miku Martineau, who takes on the role of Yumeko, the compulsive gambler. Martineau, known for her roles in Kate and Star Trek: Section 31, steps into a character previously voiced by Saori Hayami in the anime adaptation. Martineau will be joined by Ayo Solanke (Clown in a Cornfield), Eve Edwards (The Bad Orphan, The Good Doctor), Clara Alexandrova (Alert: Missing Persons Unit, Danger In The Dorm), Hunter Cardinal (Scout), Anwen O’Driscoll (You Can Live Forever, The Bearded Girl), Aviva Mongillo (Workin’ Moms, Don’t Talk to Irene), and Ryan Sutherland (Nick Shorts).

Kakegurui is produced by Simon Barry, creator of Warrior Nun, who also serves as the director and executive producer. The executive production team includes Jeff F. King, David Fortier, Ivan Schneeberg, Jon Rutherford, and Nick Nantell. This live-action series follows several previous adaptations of the manga, including a 2017 anime series and a 2019 live-action film, in which Minami Hamabe played the lead role.

Fans of the original manga and anime can look forward to the explosive debut of Kakegurui on Netflix this May.
