In the newly released trailer for The Roses, two-time Oscar nominee Benedict Cumberbatch and Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman find themselves in the midst of a bitter and escalating feud, as their once-idyllic marriage begins to unravel. The film is a reimagining of the 1989 classic The War of the Roses, which starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. The original film was adapted from the novel by Warren Adler, and The Roses brings a fresh twist to the intense and comedic exploration of a crumbling relationship.
The trailer teases the couple’s seemingly perfect life, where Ivy (Colman) and Theo (Cumberbatch) appear to have it all—successful careers, a loving marriage, and happy children. However, as Theo’s career takes a nosedive and Ivy’s ambitions take off, tensions start to bubble beneath the surface, eventually igniting a fierce battle fueled by resentment and competition.
Alongside Cumberbatch and Colman, the ensemble cast features a range of talent including Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Belinda Bromilow, Sunita Mani, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao, and Kate McKinnon.
The film is directed by Jay Roach, known for his work on Meet the Fockers, with a screenplay written by Tony McNamara. Producers include Roach, Michelle Graham, Adam Ackland, Leah Clarke, Ed Sinclair, and Tom Carver. Executive producers are Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman, James L. Brooks, Michael Adler, Jonathan Adler, and Cáit Collins.
The Roses is set to hit theaters on August 29, 2025.
