Eric Dane Reveals ALS Diagnosis, Plans Return to Work

by Chris Davies

Actor Eric Dane, best known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and HBO’s Euphoria, has publicly disclosed his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive and ultimately fatal neurodegenerative disease.

“I have been diagnosed with ALS,” Dane, 52, shared last week. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”

ALS, also referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, affects the brain and spinal cord, gradually robbing individuals of muscle control. The condition is named after the iconic baseball player who was diagnosed with the illness in 1939. Early symptoms typically include muscle weakness, twitching, and significant weight loss as motor neurons steadily deteriorate. There is currently no known cure, and the average life expectancy following diagnosis is three to five years.

Dane was recently photographed in Los Angeles with his family, prompting a wave of public concern over his noticeably frail appearance. Despite the visible toll of the disease, Dane remains determined to continue his work in entertainment.

The actor’s personal life has also seen a notable shift. His wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, recently filed to dismiss their divorce after a seven-year separation. The couple, who married in October 2004, share two daughters—Billie Beatrice, 15, and Georgia Geraldine, 13.

Gayheart emphasized the enduring strength of their family unit: “We are really close. We are great co-parents. We really figured out the formula to staying a family, and I think our kids are benefiting greatly from it, and we are as well.”

While the reasons for their reconciliation remain private, it is believed that Dane’s health challenges may have played a role in the couple’s decision to reunite. Regardless, the actor remains focused on his health, his family, and his craft.
