Netflix is serving up a slice of tradition with Nonnas, a feel-good comedy led by Vince Vaughn and directed by The Perks of Being a Wallflower filmmaker Stephen Chbosky. The film, based on a true story, premieres on the streaming platform May 9.
Nonnas tells the inspiring tale of Joe Scaravella, played by Vaughn, who reinvents his life by opening an Italian restaurant staffed entirely by Italian grandmothers—affectionately known as “nonnas.” The film draws from the real-life Scaravella’s experiences as the founder of Enoteca Maria, a beloved Staten Island eatery, and author of the 2015 cookbook Nonna’s House.
Joining Vaughn in the ensemble cast are Linda Cardellini, Lorraine Bracco, Talia Shire, Brenda Vaccaro, Joe Manganiello, and Campbell Scott. Susan Sarandon also appears in the film and is seen in the trailer encouraging Vaughn’s character with the poignant advice, “The only thing that you’re gonna regret are the moments that you did not take.”
In the trailer, Vaughn expresses the heart of the film: “I want them to make the dishes that they were passed on from their family. I want to share it with everybody.”
The script was penned by Liz Maccie, with Gigi Pritzker and Rachel Shane producing for Madison Wells alongside Jack Turner for Matador Content.
Vaughn, known for recent roles in Queenpins, Freaky, and the upcoming series Bad Monkey, is also lending his voice to Warner Bros.’ animated film Animal Friends, alongside a star-studded cast including Ryan Reynolds, Jason Momoa, and Aubrey Plaza.
Sarandon, meanwhile, recently starred in Tyler Perry’s Netflix film The Six Triple Eight with Kerry Washington.
With a cast full of veteran talent and a story steeped in love, heritage, and home-cooked meals, Nonnas promises to be a heartfelt celebration of family and the timeless power of tradition.
