Mongrel Media and Saban Films have released the official trailer for The Last Spark of Hope, a Polish post-apocalyptic survival thriller directed by Piotr Biedron. The film, which marks Biedron’s feature directorial debut, premiered at the 2023 Octopus and Gdynia Polish Film Festivals, as well as the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival in Italy. Now, it is set for a VOD release in the United States on April 29, 2025.
The story follows Eva (played by Magdalena Wieczorek), a woman who may be the last human on Earth. Struggling to survive in a desolate, post-apocalyptic world, she is accompanied only by a robot designed to safeguard their small, isolated patch of land. However, when Eva attempts to return from repairing solar panels, she gives an incorrect password—an error that traps her outside, as the robot refuses entry. With no way back in and the robot’s programming turning against her, Eva faces a new battle for survival.
The film, also known as W nich cala nadzieja (The Last Human) in Polish, presents a tense scenario of isolation, survival, and human-robot interaction. The robot, which has drawn comparisons to the quirky character of Johnny 5 from Short Circuit, is integral to the drama, adding a unique dynamic to the story.
Produced by Beata Pisula, The Last Spark of Hope is a gripping exploration of human resilience, set against the backdrop of a world devastated by climate wars. Though the film may draw comparisons to other sci-fi works, such as Tom Hanks’ Finch, it promises to deliver its own unique narrative.
