XYZ Films and Variance Films have announced a theatrical release date of March 7, 2025, for Seven Veils, a drama starring Academy Award nominee Amanda Seyfried (Mank). The film marks a reunion between Seyfried and acclaimed writer-director Atom Egoyan, who previously collaborated on the 2009 psychological thriller Chloe, alongside Julianne Moore, Liam Neeson, and Max Thieriot.
In addition to Seyfried, the cast includes Rebecca Liddiard, Douglas Smith, Mark O’Brien, Vinessa Antoine, Ambur Braid, and Michael Kupfer-Radecky. Seven Veils had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival and was later showcased at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival.
A Tale of Trauma and Unraveling Lives
According to the official synopsis, the story centers on Jeanine (Seyfried), a theater director returning to the opera world after years away to stage her former mentor’s iconic work. As she grapples with disturbing memories from her past, Jeanine’s personal and professional lives spiral out of control, influenced by the unresolved trauma she carries.
Egoyan’s Vision: Blending Opera and Cinema
The roots of Seven Veils lie in Egoyan’s longstanding fascination with the opera Salome, which he first directed in 1996. The filmmaker expressed his desire to merge the worlds of opera and cinema, using the staging of Salome as a narrative backdrop.
“When I learned that the Canadian Opera Company was remounting Salome, I saw an opportunity to integrate the opera singers they had booked into the script I’d written,” Egoyan said, reflecting on the film’s genesis.
While the movie draws from the themes of Salome, Egoyan emphasized that it is not strictly an opera film. “It uses the opera world as a workplace, much like any other, where characters navigate their personal and professional complexities during the preparation of the production,” he explained.
Production Team
The film’s production boasts an impressive team, with Atom Egoyan, Niv Fichman, Simone Urdl, Kevin Krikst, and Fraser Ash serving as producers. Executive producers include Nate Bolotin, Maxime Cottray, Adrian Love, Noah Segal, John Sloss, Nick Spicer, and Aram Tertzakian.
With its powerful narrative and Seyfried’s compelling lead performance, Seven Veils is poised to captivate audiences when it hits theaters in March 2025.
