New Trailer for ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Live-Action Movie Released

by Chris Davies

A fresh, minute-long trailer for the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon has just been released, showcasing new, never-before-seen footage. The new visuals highlight significant improvements, including an even more impressive rendition of Toothless, the beloved Night Fury dragon, which has captured the hearts of audiences since its debut in the animated version. Fans also get a glimpse of other dragons, such as Stormfly and Hookfang, and more of Hiccup’s first moments with Toothless, his future best friend.

Despite the similarities to DreamWorks Animation’s original, the trailer presents an epic atmosphere, with the potential for this adaptation to become one of 2025’s biggest blockbusters. Early reactions to the footage suggest a thrilling ride that fans can look forward to next year.

Gerard Butler, who reprises his role as Chief Stoick the Vast, has expressed excitement about the film, calling it “a game-changer.” In a recent interview, he described the experience of being part of the project as a joy, highlighting the collaborative effort behind the scenes. “I can say it has just been a joy to be a part of these movies, to tell those stories, and see them being received by the public,” said Butler. He also spoke about the emotional impact of the film, noting the sense of magic and the potential for the story to resonate with audiences, whether through pure escapism or deeper connections. “This is going to bring all that. It’s going to be an unforgettable classic,” he added.

In the live-action adaptation, Hiccup (played by Mason Thames of The Black Phone) stands out on the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have long been bitter enemies. As the inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick, Hiccup challenges centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury. Their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons, sparking a shift in Viking society and challenging the established norms.

Alongside Hiccup are Astrid (Nico Parker, The Last of Us) and the quirky blacksmith Gobber (Nick Frost, Shaun of the Dead), who join him on his journey of reconciling a world divided by fear and misunderstanding. As an ancient threat looms, threatening both Vikings and dragons, Hiccup’s relationship with Toothless becomes pivotal in securing a new future for both species. Together, they will fight for peace, breaking down barriers and redefining heroism.

The film also stars Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), Gabriel Howell (Bodies), Bronwyn James (Wicked), Harry Trevaldwyn (Smothered), Ruth Codd (The Midnight Club), Peter Serafinowicz (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Murray McArthur (Game of Thrones).

Directed, written, and produced by Dean DeBlois, How to Train Your Dragon is set to hit theaters on June 13, 2025.
