Sony to Release ‘28 Days Later’ Digitally Just in Time for the Holidays

by Chris Davies

Sony is bringing the iconic 2002 zombie thriller 28 Days Later to digital platforms just in time for the holiday season. The film, directed by Danny Boyle, will be available for both purchase and rental starting December 18. This digital release follows the huge success of the trailer for its highly anticipated sequel, 28 Years Later, which has already garnered over 146 million views globally.

For years, 28 Days Later has been largely unavailable on streaming services due to rights issues. Its physical copies have also been out of print, making it difficult for fans to revisit the film ahead of the sequel’s release in June 2025. The digital launch provides a long-awaited opportunity for audiences to experience the 2002 classic once more.

The trailer for 28 Years Later has become a viral sensation, accumulating 60.2 million views upon release, and currently ranks as the second most-watched horror trailer of all time, behind only It Chapter Two. Its success has surpassed the trailer releases for other major horror franchises, including The Nun, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, and Smile 2.

28 Days Later follows a group of animal rights activists who inadvertently release infected chimpanzees, sparking a global outbreak that turns humanity into flesh-eating zombies. The film’s protagonist, Jim, played by Cillian Murphy, wakes from a coma to find the world overrun by these creatures.

The film also stars Naomie Harris and Brendan Gleeson. Its 2007 sequel, 28 Weeks Later, directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, further expanded the universe, featuring a new cast that included Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, and Jeremy Renner.

Fans eager to relive the terror of 28 Days Later can do so on December 18 when the film hits digital platforms.
