A24’s “Warfare” Trailer Brings Realism to 2006 Iraq Conflict

by Chris Davies

A24 has unveiled its first gripping trailer for Warfare, a war drama that takes viewers deep into the harrowing events of a 2006 battle in Iraq. The film, which draws from the firsthand accounts of soldiers who survived the brutal engagement, offers a visceral look at modern warfare through the eyes of American Navy SEALs.

Co-written and co-directed by Alex Garland, in collaboration with ex-Navy SEAL Ray Mendoza, Warfare offers a unique and immersive experience. According to A24, the film “immerses audiences with a platoon of American Navy SEALs who take refuge in the home of an Iraqi family, observing US forces’ movements through insurgent-controlled territory.” The drama is described as “a boots-on-the-ground narrative,” told in real-time and based on the memories of those who lived through it.

The cast includes D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, and Taylor John Smith, with supporting roles from Michael Gandolfini, Adain Bradley, Noah Centineo, Evan Holtzman, Henrique Zaga, Joseph Quinn, and Charles Melton.

Mendoza, who served in the Navy from 1997, brings authenticity to the film as a former member of SEAL Team 5 and a Land Warfare Training Detachment instructor. His distinguished service earned him the Silver Star for “conspicuous gallantry” during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM in November 2006. Alongside former Army Ranger Jariko Denman, Mendoza co-founded War Office Productions, which has advised on several military-themed films, including The Long Road Home, Lone Survivor, and Act of Valor.

Warfare promises to offer an unprecedented, gritty portrayal of warfare, guided by the expertise of those who lived through it.
