‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Hits $200M Milestone

by Chris Davies

Captain America: Brave New World has officially passed a major box office milestone, joining the elusive $200 million domestic club after a steady nine-week theatrical run. The film, led by Anthony Mackie in his first solo outing as the new Captain America, becomes only the second 2025 release to reach this benchmark, reflecting a modest but noteworthy success for Marvel Studios in a year of shifting audience expectations.

According to box office data, Brave New World earned $38,000 on its ninth Wednesday in theaters—a sharp 71.2% decline from the previous week—indicating the final stages of its theatrical lifespan. With only 440 theaters still screening the movie and digital availability already underway, the film is winding down. Nevertheless, it exits the box office with a sense of accomplishment, having achieved a level of financial success that, while modest by Marvel standards, remains significant in today’s cinematic climate.

Directed by Julius Onah, the film continues the storyline of Sam Wilson, formerly known as the Falcon, as he assumes the mantle of Captain America following the events of Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The narrative propels Wilson into a politically charged conflict involving newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross—portrayed by Harrison Ford in his Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) debut.

Ross’s transformation into the Red Hulk adds a powerful and symbolic layer of conflict, enhancing the story’s tension while tying back to longstanding MCU lore. Ford’s presence, coupled with Mackie’s evolution into the role of Captain America, provides the film with its emotional and thematic center.

The supporting cast features Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, and Giancarlo Esposito, with Liv Tyler and Tim Blake Nelson reprising their roles from 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. This return to early MCU roots brings a wave of nostalgia for longtime fans. Esposito’s late addition to the cast through reshoots injected new energy into the film’s second act, offering a fresh narrative pivot that has sparked curiosity among audiences.

Critics offered mixed reactions, citing an uneven screenplay and an overreliance on broader MCU continuity. However, performances—particularly from Mackie and Ford—received widespread praise. Reviewers also acknowledged the film’s ambition, suggesting it may serve as a pivotal chapter in shaping the direction of Marvel’s Phase Five.

Premiering on February 14 at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, Captain America: Brave New World launched as the 35th film in the MCU. It is a central component of Phase Five and a symbolic torch-passing entry, reflecting Marvel’s evolving character lineup. As of this week, the film has grossed $414 million globally, ranking as the fourth highest-grossing film of 2025.

While Brave New World may not have matched the box office dominance of its predecessors, its $200 million domestic take confirms that the Captain America legacy—now carried by Sam Wilson—still resonates with audiences. In a time of franchise fatigue and evolving viewer habits, the film’s performance underscores that the shield remains a powerful symbol, both onscreen and at the box office.
