A highly anticipated sequel to the 2020 anime film Poupelle of Chimney Town has officially been announced, with a new title, Entotsu-machi no Poupelle ~ Yakusoku no Tokeidai~ (translated as “Poupelle of Chimney Town: The Promised Clocktower). The film is slated to hit Japanese theaters in the spring of 2026, continuing the captivating narrative from the original movie, which was based on Akihiro Nishino’s beloved book series.
Once again, the sequel will be directed by Yusuke Hirota, known for his work on the first film, and will be produced by STUDIO4℃. Toho and CHIMNEY TOWN will oversee distribution. A special video clip and an exclusive new illustration by Akihiro Nishino were also released in tandem with the announcement, offering fans a sneak peek into the visual style and emotional tone of the upcoming film.
In the United States, Poupelle of Chimney Town was released on home video by Shout! Factory, where it was described as “breathtaking” and filled with inspiring performances and stunning visuals. The story follows a young boy named Lubicchi and his encounter with a garbage-made man, Poupelle, as they search for the stars that Lubicchi’s father spoke of while living in a smoky, isolated town. The original film, produced at Tokyo’s renowned STUDIO4℃, was praised for its rich animation, evocative music, and emotional storytelling, which promised to bring tears, laughter, and joy to audiences.
The upcoming sequel is expected to build upon the unique world and heartfelt themes that made the first film a standout, continuing to explore Lubicchi’s journey and the promise of discovery in the chimneys’ shadows. Fans are eagerly anticipating what new adventures await in The Promised Clocktower.
