by Chris Davies

Disney has officially announced the release date for Moana 2, the much-anticipated sequel to the 2016 animated hit. The film will be available for streaming exclusively on Disney+ beginning March 12.

While the first Moana movie received critical acclaim and grossed over $1 billion globally, its sequel has garnered a more mixed reception. Currently holding a 61% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Moana 2 falls short of the original’s Certified Fresh status. However, it still remains a highly anticipated title for Disney+ subscribers.

The official plot synopsis reveals that Moana 2 picks up three years after the events of the first film. Moana reunites with Maui for an epic new adventure, joined by a diverse crew of seafarers. After receiving a mysterious call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana embarks on a perilous journey across Oceania to explore uncharted waters in an adventure that promises to push her limits.

The voice cast for the sequel includes Auliʻi Cravalho as Moana, Dwayne Johnson as Maui, and returning characters voiced by Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, and Rachel House. New additions to the cast include Rose Matafeo as Loto and David Fane as Kele.

Directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, Moana 2 features a screenplay co-written by Miller and Jared Bush. The film is executive produced by Bush, Johnson, and Jennifer Lee.

The original Moana was not only a box office triumph, grossing over $600 million worldwide, but also earned critical praise and multiple Oscar nominations, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.

Fans of the franchise can now look forward to the next chapter of Moana’s journey, which promises to be a thrilling adventure for both new and returning viewers.
