“Companion” Trailer Reveals Haunting Sci-Fi Horror Twist

by Chris Davies

The official trailer for Companion has arrived, teasing a chilling love story that blends science fiction with horror. Produced by Barbarian’s Zach Cregger, the film promises an eerie exploration of romance gone wrong, as it takes a dark turn into uncharted territory.

Starring Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets, The Boogeyman) as Iris, the story follows an ordinary woman who falls for billionaire Josh, played by Jack Quaid (The Boys, Scream). However, their seemingly perfect relationship quickly unravels when Iris uncovers a terrifying truth: she is, in fact, a sex robot programmed to fulfill her partner’s twisted desires.

In an exclusive interview, writer-director Drew Hancock, in his feature debut, discussed the decision to reveal the plot twist in the trailer. Hancock expressed initial hesitation but acknowledged the necessity of offering audiences a glimpse into the film’s unique premise. “The silver lining of showing the audience this is a movie about a robot is it’s a way to get ahead of anyone dismissing it as another robot movie,” Hancock said. He went on to clarify that Companion is not in the same vein as M3GAN or Subservience, emphasizing, “It’s not A.I. gone wrong, it’s A.I. gone right.”

The cast also features Lukas Gage (Smile 2), Megan Suri (It Lives Inside), Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows), and Rupert Friend (Asteroid City). The behind-the-scenes team includes cinematographer Eli Born (The Boogeyman), production designer Scott Kuzio (Fear Street), and composer Hrishikesh Hirway (Song Exploder).

Companion will make its theatrical debut on January 30 in Australia and January 31 in the United States.
