Disney’s long-awaited live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch is finally scheduled to hit theaters on May 23, 2025. The film has been in development for several years, with discussions first surfacing as early as 2018. After various changes in direction, including initial consideration of Wicked director John M. Chu in 2020, Dean Fleischer Camp (known for Marcel the Shell with Shoes On) was ultimately chosen to direct the remake. Initially slated for a Disney+ release, the film’s journey took a significant turn in 2023 when Disney announced it would receive a theatrical release instead, likely influenced by the changing landscape of streaming services.
Behind the Camera: Dean Fleischer Camp Takes the Helm
Fleischer Camp, who is best known for co-creating the acclaimed Marcel the Shell web series, brings his unique style of blending animation and live-action to this Disney remake. His directorial debut, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (2021), earned widespread praise and an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature. This marks his second feature film, following a 2016 documentary. Known for his emotional depth and ability to capture the charm of quirky, lovable characters, Fleischer Camp seems well-suited for Lilo & Stitch, a story that also revolves around the bond between an unlikely pair.
Joining Fleischer Camp in crafting the film’s story is Chris Kekaniokalani Bright, the credited screenwriter, while Mike Van Waes contributed to earlier drafts dating back to 2018. The animated Lilo & Stitch was co-written by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, who also co-directed the original film.
A Star-Studded Cast Brings Iconic Characters to Life
Chris Sanders, the voice behind Stitch in the original 2002 animated film, returns to voice the chaotic yet endearing alien character. Sanders, who has worked on projects at both Disney and DreamWorks Animation, including How to Train Your Dragon and The Croods, is a key figure in maintaining the spirit of the original film.
The role of Lilo, the spirited Hawaiian girl who adopts Stitch, is played by Maia Kealoha, a newcomer to Hollywood who was cast following a nationwide search. Kealoha’s portrayal follows Daveigh Chase’s voice role in the animated film. Lilo’s older sister, Nani, is portrayed by Sydney Agudong, who takes over from Tia Carrere. Agudong, born in Kaua’i, Hawaii, brings authenticity to her role as the overburdened legal guardian.
Carrere, however, returns in a new role as Mrs. Kekoa, a social worker who is sympathetic to Nani but must prioritize Lilo’s well-being. Notably, Ving Rhames’ character, Cobra Bubbles, also makes a return, with actor Courtney B. Vance stepping into the role. Other key cast members include Kaipo Dudoit as David, Nani’s surfer boyfriend, and Amy Hill as Tūtū, a new character who serves as a kindly neighbor.
On the alien side, Zach Galifianakis portrays Dr. Jumba Jookiba, the mad scientist who created Stitch, while Billy Magnussen plays Agent Pleakley, tasked with helping Jumba capture Stitch. Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham’s role remains under wraps, though she is likely playing the Grand Councilwoman of the Galactic Federation.
Staying True to the Original Storyline with New Twists
While some new characters and updates suggest certain changes to the plot, the live-action Lilo & Stitch is expected to follow the same basic narrative as the original. The film centers on Lilo, a young girl living in Kaua’i under the care of her older sister, Nani, after their parents’ tragic death. Lilo, struggling with loneliness and a strained relationship with Nani, adopts Stitch, who she believes to be a dog. However, Stitch is revealed to be an alien experiment, and despite his destructive tendencies, he and Lilo form an unbreakable bond, showcasing the importance of family, or ʻohana, in Hawaiian culture.
The original Lilo & Stitch was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $273 million worldwide and earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature. The film’s enduring popularity led to several sequels and spin-offs, cementing its place as one of Disney’s most beloved movies from the post-“Disney Renaissance” era.
Teasers and Trailers Build Anticipation
Fans have eagerly awaited glimpses of the live-action remake, especially Stitch’s reimagined look. At the 2024 D23 Expo, Disney revealed the new CGI design for Stitch, which garnered a generally positive reception. The first teaser trailer, released in November 2024, showcased Stitch in action, stomping through sandcastles, while a second teaser debuted in December, offering a brief but playful moment with Stitch in the water.
Though the teasers don’t reveal much about the film’s plot, they give fans a sense of the movie‘s tone and hint at the design choices that will bring the beloved alien character to life in a live-action setting. The response from fans has been enthusiastic, and the release of further promotional material is expected to ramp up excitement leading to the film’s May 2025 release.
With a talented cast, a director known for his heartfelt storytelling, and a plot that honors the original film’s themes of family and acceptance, the live-action Lilo & Stitch is shaping up to be a highly anticipated addition to Disney’s lineup of live-action adaptations.
